Five Minutes With Strangers: Shaun & Emory

November 14, 2011

Pete noticed them first. You must know, I am blaming him for the whole thing.

“He’s got a great smile, don’t you think?” He nudged me out of my concentration. The kids were home with a sitter, and Pete and I had a camera date – him for the learning, me for the battle with my exposures after recalibrating my camera the day before.

“Who?”

“The guy behind the girl in the striped shirt.”

“Oooh – she’s pretty! I’d love to get her on my camera…”

We moved on through Charleston’s Farmer’s Market, a favorite spot of ours, and I fell into full photography mode, shooting whatever caught my eye at the stalls we passed. I probably wouldn’t have thought of it again if he hadn’t noticed them.

“Look, there’s that couple again.” He pointed them out among several other couples who were seated on the grass behind the stalls.

I paused on the sidewalk, watching their conversation for a moment. Finally, I looked at Pete, scrunching my face up. “What if I…”

“Do you want to?”

“Yeah, but…” I prevaricated. “I think I’m too chicken.” Still, I could see myself walking over to them and asking them to shoot with me – and when I see myself doing something, I know I’ll probably do it.

But Pete made the first move. I promise. It was almost all him.

My husband is INCREDIBLE with people, and true to form, he walked right up to this very cute couple with a “pardon me, my wife would like to take your picture…” We had a funny husband/wife interplay over who was getting the blame for THIS weird move – and believe it or not, THEY SAID YES!

The guy with the smile turned out to be Shaun – and the pretty girl with the so-sweet spirit? She’s Emory. They gave us one of the best moments from our own date that morning – and I hope we gave them one for theirs with this five minute mini-session!

This surprise shoot surprised even me, but my five minutes with Shaun and Emory was TOO. MUCH. FUN. I told Pete as we walked away that we really ought to do that more often.

“Not too often,” he said, wiser than I tend to be when I’m on a high. “It would feel like work if we did that.”

I put my internal foot down. Oh, we’re so doing this again…

Love the spontaneity–no one dressed all fancy for the shoot or worried about hairstyles. They were just there. Real. Honest.

I was reading a photography article about taking portraits over at Darren Rowse’s Digital Photography School, and he mentioned a photographer who simply takes to the streets of Melbourne and asks strangers if he may take their photo. Love the idea–I need to take someone bold along with me. My husband could NEVER do what Pete did. I could, if I were in the right mood. I think Charity could do it. Maybe that’s what I’ll do–take Charity along as my people-grabber.

Thanks for sharing your fun weekend!

I hope you pay Pete an agent’s fee. These photos turned out so well you should pay him a bonus.

What is it with you and Claire Burge today, hanging out with strangers? Once again, your talent simply slays me. What I like best about this post, though, is sensing just how much fun you and your husband had together. You know me; I’m all about the fun!
