An [I Love] Saturday: Rose-Gold on February Waves

November 19, 2011

This week’s [ I LOVE ] Saturdays photo holds my favorite light in the world, light I first discovered as a child watching the sun set over the frosted December fields outside our midwest home. I rediscovered it many years later driving home from work one evening with the sun carelessly spilling rose-gold through the trees across the frozen snow.

On the day I took this photo, I had dared myself to try taking pictures for real, but everything I shot was falling flat. The move from my Virginia home to South Carolina had taken its toll on me with the yellowed light and lack of winter here. I was trying to shoot beauty through homesick, and it wasn’t working. My heart simply wouldn’t engage.

Finally, Pete hustled my frustrated self out the door to the sea.

The sea always quiets me; it always offers up something to help me breathe. That night, it held out my familiar warm winter rose falling gold onto white foam – igniting hope that I might find some home here in Charleston too, in spite of the differences.

Every winter since, when our gold light is tinted rose as the sun sinks over the horizon, I’ve remembered this moment, and my heart wakes up again.

When I retooled my bio, I included a list of things I love because so much of what I photograph is driven by what I love. Since I don’t usually post on Saturdays, I decided to publish a light post on Saturdays with a photo and an [ I LOVE ] list about the things that make my world.

So friends, meet my [ I LOVE ] Saturdays. They’re like my Friday Favorites – only you get to play along too!

Just post the permalink to a photo you love, using the linky below, and leave me a comment! Be sure to include the [I LOVE] button in your post so others can come hang out!

  2. Kelly, love how you captured the colors of light here. And I feel the same about the sea quieting. It is such a blessing to live so near the ocean. I am going there today to have family photos made. It has actually been awhile since I pushed my toes in the sand. Can’t wait! Thanks for the link and though I didn’t comment on your previous post, your honesty reveals your lovely heart. I really enjoyed it as well.

  12. The color you find at the sea — it’s just not a part of my world here on the plains. Especially not since everything blanketed white overnight. I always love when you post the rose-gold. So thanks for coloring my weekend a bit. ;-)
