Real Life | My Sister-in-Law, Mary Jo Margaret

She is twenty-five, spunky sweet, and absolutely, completely convinced that she is the most beautiful girl in the world. She learned to play the cello, and to read and to write, and she can tell you the names of every first lady who has ever lived in the white house. I caught a glimpse of her sitting in the light as she finished breakfast at our dining room table, and I had to go and grab my camera to tell a little of her story – the one she’s writing with her life, even as she writes and writes and writes.

I don’t know what she’s writing with her pen (it’s a secret), but I know she knows how to be childlike, how to get up in the morning and be who she is, how to encourage, how to dream, and how to hope against all odds. I was hoping for a real-people model this week. I couldn’t have asked for more real than my one-of-a-kind sister-in-law. And she loved working with me to make this art. I wish everyone I photographed was so comfortable with themselves under the camera!

  4. Maureen says:

Beautifully expressed in image and word, Kelly. Love the colors.

  5. There’s something you’ve captured here–it even involves the purple–that needs a wider circulation. I mean national circulation.

  6. I agree with Megan – of course, I am an absolute sucker for purple – but these are just breath-taking. So is she, and so are you. Thank you.
